The Union Cabinet's decision to restore the 200-point roster system has brought cheer to students and teachers across the country who have relentless protesting for months. The students and teachers also went on a nation wide bandh on March 5 to protest against the new roster system. 

Earlier today, the Cabinet Union accepted the MHRD's proposal to pass an ordinance to restore the 200-point system and do away with the 13-point roster system. The 13-point roster meant that the reservation would be applied to taking each department as a unit. While the 200-point system, that has been in play all these years applies reservation based on the entire campus as a unit. The 200-point system meant that there were more opportunities for people from the SC,ST and OBC communities. The new system would have brought down the opportunities drastically.

Just last week, an apex court upheld the Allahabad High Court's judgement that had been passed in favour of the 13-point roster system. The decision has been welcomes wholeheartedly by campuses across the country.
