Karnataka Textbook Committee to decide Tipu Sultan's fate within one month

Whether or not any mention of Tipu Sultan will remain in textbooks in Karnataka will be known in one month - once the Karnataka Textbook Society gives their recommendation to the government and they will take a final call.

The news of removing any mention of Tipu Sultan from school textbooks has led to a lot of debate and discussion. It was MLA Appachu Ranjan's idea to remove his content from the textbooks and not to glorify him. On October 1, 2019, the MLA had submitted letter to the Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar which stated a few reasons on why Tipu Sultan must not be glorified and that he did not fight to free India.

H N Gopalakrishna, Director, DSERT met the MLA today where he submitted necessary documents to the textbooks committee and Itihas Samiti constituted by the government. When we asked him about what has been mentioned in the documents submitted, he said, "We cannot reveal those points present in the document. The government has given a time frame of one month to research Tipu Sultan. The Textbook Committee consists of Prof Ashwath Narayan from the University of Mysore and other members. The report prepared by this committee will be sent to the government. Whether Tipu Sultan has to be included or dropped from the textbooks will be decided by the government."
