Here's why the foundation of your career development lies in your ability to self assess

Nicholas Francis

The foundation for career development for any youth lies in the strength of their self-assessment. It can be noticed that there is a very significant level of complacency among the youth. There has to be a greater sensitisation among the students to develop a positive level of self-assessment. In the present globalised era, where multi-sector career openings and numerous job portfolios are emerging, there is a much wider choice that can be made by the youth. All that the youth need to have is an understanding of these developments and have a realistic self-assessment of themselves. Each sector calls for specific requirements in regards to qualification and practical training apart.

They need to have a strong quotient of self-reflection in the form of self-assessment to bring out their internal potentials. Self-assessment can help an individual make informed decisions as well.
As a human resource mentor, I would advise the youth to undergo self-assessment to map their mindset rather than face a difficult situation later on. This can be a vital exercise. The youth can do this if they answer the following questions honestly:

List the activities that you would be happy to do in a job environment.
What are your natural skills?
Are you an emotional person?
Can you take up leadership positions with ease?
Are you a creative or organised person?
Do you always come up with answers to any problem around you?

Will you be able to complete tasks assigned to you within the stipulated period of time?
What job locations excite you? Is it an office environment or do you like to travel?
Will you be able to work in a challenging environment?
Do you prefer working independently or as part of a larger team?

Many of these questions are very personal — the importance of personal competence is very essential to attain professional competence.
