With news on changing government school headmasters to the principal doing the rounds on social media, a group of teachers demanded the education department to give clarification the veracity of the news and also let down the plans on converting their designation.

On the other hand, the education department denied any plans to change the headmasters as the school principals. The higher officials also claimed the news is fake and instructed teachers to not to believe it.

Speaking to Express, Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Graduate Teachers Association district president T Arulanandham said, "a piece of news is sharing at education websites and teachers Whatsapp groups that the school education department will change the designation of school headmasters as principals similar to private schools. The government schools teachers were confused by this news, after this message."

"If the school headmasters name will change as principal, the headmaster posts will abolish in schools. Already the school education department is trying to merge primary and middle schools near high and higher secondary schools. Recently, primary schools were merged high and higher secondary schools which are functioning the same campus. Now, this news has given a big shock to us. Similar to private schools principals, the school education department is trying to give all powers to school headmasters hand. For this, the name may be changed from school headmasters as principals. As a result, secondary grade and graduate teachers will lose their promotion of headmasters post. Hence the school education department to give clear clarification through the circular or announcement regarding name changing news," he demanded.

When asked about this, School Education director S Kannappan said, "This is fake news and we did not take any decision regarding this."
