From the paddy fields of Thanjavur to the podium at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, a farmer's son has proved that determination and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. Praveen Chitravel made his way into the record books by winning bronze in the triple jump event.

"The competition was tough. Plus, it was cold and during the third attempt, I injured my back. But for that, I could have done better," Praveen told Express from Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old's success story is nothing but a heartwarming one. His father Chitravel, who is a farmer, couldn't afford to provide his son with proper training or diet as he had to feed his family of five with his meager daily earnings. However, Praveen was determined to give is best and push himself to achieve the best despite all odds.

Describing his win, Praveen's coach, Indira Suresh said, "It's a unique achievement considering his background.'' Praveen has been training under her for past five years, impressed the coach with his ability to put up with hard yards during training. "Our next goal is to excel at the senior level," Indira added.
