MCC professors accused in sexual harassment case dismissed?

The two Madras Christian College professors who were found guilty in the sexual harassment case have reportedly been dismissed from their jobs. While the College didn't seem to have released an official statement, students say the professors have not attended any of the classes in the last two weeks.

R Raveen and Samuel Tennyson have both not been taking classes in the Zoology department for the last two weeks, students said. "We've not seen anything official. But we've heard that they'be been dismissed," a student leader on campus said.

Last month, students were surprised to find both the professors sitting in the staff room just before the college reopened. The students were furious because both the professors had been found guilty in the ICC enquiry conducted in their case. The students also complained of an altercation with the staff and they were asked to leave campus as well.

"The professors were still taking class for the postgraduate programme but the students continued to raise the issue," a student said.

Towards the end of the previous academic year, students protested after the department failed to take action against the two professors they had complained about. The students alleged that Raveen behaved inappropriately with them while they were on their class tour and that Tennyson had done nothing to stop it. After heated protests, MCC constituted an ICC committee including internal and external members who found both the professors guilty.

The students were told by the management that they would take action after the ICC conducted their enquiry. But the professors returned to their positions in the beginning of this new academic year. The students told Edex the management had told them that the professors had 'apologised'. "The apology was not made to us or the victims, so who did he apologise to and why were we not informed of the college's decision?" the students had questioned.

One of the students also said that they had come to know that Tennyson had filed a case against his dismissal, "We wanted to file a case against the professor and we were getting some legal advice for the same. That is when we came to know about the case he has filed against the college."

Edex got in touch with the PRO and the principal and we are awaiting their response. We will update this copy as soon as we receive their official statement.
