Eighty-nine-year-old Lakshmi Ramalingam Mudaliar Government School and Intermediate college in Bolarum, where Mahatma Gandhi was housed in 1942 for a day when he had visited Hyderabad as part of Quit India movement, gets a fresh lease of life after deputy CM and education minister Kadiam Srihari sanctioned Rs 3 crore towards construction of a new building in the same campus in order to do away with the dilapidated structures.

He also promised to upgrade the school to the status of a government degree college. SCB received an order on Friday and CEO SVR Chandrasekhar has immediately responded by forwarding a proposal to state government. TNIE had reported about the issue earlier in March 2018.

The present school building is a picture of the pathetic state. Out of the 20 rooms in the school, 14 are in a dilapidated state. The school is located in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board ward-8. The elected ward members had approached the education minister requesting construction of a new building.

P Raghavendra Rao, an old student of the school said, "We are thankful to Express for highlighting the issue. We congratulate the elected board members for taking up the issue. We never expected the government to sanction funds for the new building. The Parents and Students dreams have comes true with the announcement for the new building."

Speaking to Express, J Lokanadham, an elected member of ward-8, said, the minister only sought a NOC from the SCB to start construction of the new building. "We explained to CEO of SCB and he also agreed to give NOC to state government construct the new building," he added.

SCB V-P, J Ram Krishna, when contacted said, with the sanctioned Rs 3 crore towards construction of new building, the minister has also promised to upgrade the school to a degree college in the future.
