Kerala woman becomes first female firefighter to be appointed by AAI at Chennai airport

Airport firefighter jobs remained a male stronghold for long, but that is changing. Remya Sreekantan is the first woman firefighter in the AAI in South India and the third in AAI

Remya Sreekantan (28) created history as she has become the first woman firefighter to join the Chennai airport. According to the Airports Authority of India, Remya is the first woman firefighter in the AAI in South India and the third in AAI. She joined the Chennai airport as Junior Assistant (AFS) on November 1, 2019. Earlier, she has undergone four-month rigorous training at the Fire Training Centre (FTC), New Delhi. 

Remya said, "I think I have landed on a job which is challenging and I am confident of delivering. I hope more women will join Fire Services in the future, but then we need to have the right mindset to explore the avenues at disposal. Hailing from a  modest family in Thiruvananthapuram and mother of a two-year-old child Remya is a postgraduate in structural engineering. She had also worked as Assistant Professor at LBS Institute of Technology for Women. 

The AAI inducted the first woman firefighter into its ranks in 2018, heralding the change that was about to take place in future, a release said.
