Hours after news broke of police brutality on students in Jamia Millia Islamia, students from Aligarh Muslim University claimed that police fired tear gas into peacefully gathered students. The students also claimed that they were brutally lathicharged and that several were injured. Students claim that they stones were thrown at them as well.

The AMU students are on their sixth consecutive day of protest. The students launched a hunger strike the day the Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha. They called off the fast the next day after the Rajya Sabha also passed the Bill. Ever since the students from Jamia and the women's college have been protesting peacefully. Several prominent personalities were invited to speak to the students over the last few days.

The students also chose to write their exams while continuing the protests and have maintained decorum throughout. On Sunday evening at around 8, students said that police began to lathicharges students who had gathered at Bab-e-Syed as usual for their demonstration. "We were quiet and did not do anything at all. All of a sudden the police started beating us with lathis and firing tear gas at us. Please help us," a student said.
