The RSS affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad swept the maiden students' union polls at the Central University of Gujarat, winning all the three seats. The three student representative posts in the union are won by the organisation's Ashwini Kumar (Undergraduate), Nisarg Rathod (Post Graduate) and Jyoti Jaiswal (Research Scholar).

This is the first time that the 10-year-old university is facing a students' union election. "We've been demanding that the university set up a democratically elected students' union for the past three years. The administration has been ignoring the UGC's guidelines about the same," says Manish Bhartwal, Gujarat State Research Coordinator, ABVP. "These elections are a result of our struggle. The students did recognise it through these elections," he says.

Apart from ABVP, BAPSA and SFI also fought the polls. "We(ABVP) worked hard the entire year for the students and that is what reflected through this result," says Manish. "While the other organisations were trying to divide the groups on the basis of religion, class, caste and language, we tried to unite them," he says.

Until last year, the university has had a Students' Council, where the members were nominated by the faculty. This was criticised by a lot of students.
