Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan has told officials to expedite piped water to schools and Anganwadi centres under the Jal Jeevan Mission. He held a review meeting through a video link with Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney and other officials about the implementation of the '100 day campaign' under the mission. "Provision of piped water to schools and Anganwadi centres under the '100 day campaign' starting from October 2 was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Jal Jeevan Mission across the country in all states and Union Territories (UTs)," said Harichandan.

Piped water will have a positive impact on children's health and help in their holistic growth, the Governor added. Also known as 'Har Ghar Jal', the Jal Jeevan Mission is meant to provide safe and adequate tap water to every household with a priority to supply safe water to children. "Children are more prone to water-borne diseases like typhoid, dysentery, diarrhea, cholera... and consumption of unsafe water is likely to have a debilitating effect on them," he said.

Harichandan called for the formulation of a time-bound plan to implement the '100 day campaign' in all schools and Anganwadi centres by involving the gram panchayats, village water and sanitation committees, NGOs and self-help groups. Sawhney explained about the action plans prepared to provide piped water to schools, Anganwadi centres and panchayat buildings. She said funds have been provided under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

According to Sawhney among 95.6 lakh rural households, 33 per cent have been provided tap connections with a target to reach 100 per cent households by 2024. As many as 44,782 schools comprising 45 per cent of all government schools and 55,607 Anganwadi centres, 35 per cent of all centres, have already been provided with piped water under the state government's 'Nadu-Nedu' scheme. Under the '100 day campaign', Sawhney said 100 per cent coverage will be provided by December.
