After several activists, educators and opposition parties raised a hue and cry over Tamil Nadu's decision to hold the Class 10 board exams, the government has cancelled the exams for this year. Chief Minister Eddapadi Palanisamy has said that all students will be declared 'pass' this year.

A day after the Telangana government cancelled exams for the tenth grade students, pressure started to mount on the Tamil Nadu government to do the same. But over the last two months, several educators, activists, doctors and members of the opposition party, mainly MK Stalin, even political leader Vaiko and others had criticised the government for wanting to conduct the exams.

The government had previously stated that the exams would be held from June 1 and then postponed it to June 15. The Madras High Court was also on the verge of staying the examinations after the issue was taken to court, in the hearing, the Bench questioned the government if they could assure that not a single student would contract the virus while attempting the exams.

The exams for certain class 11 subjects, which could not be held earlier were also cancelled.
