Viral photo about vegetarianism securing 'salvation' not from IIT Madras canteen. Here's the truth

Johanna Deeksha

Recently, a photograph of a Manusmiriti quote on a wall was being circulated as being from the canteen at IIT Madras. The quote written in Tamil loosely translated to — The benefits earned by performing ashwamedha yagnam for 100 years is equal to the adharma earned by eating non-vegetarian food. However, the person who posted the photo has clarified that it was not taken in IIT Madras.

The photo began to go viral on Facebook a few days ago. Fathima Latheef's suicide led to a lot of discussion on harassment and discrimination and the message in the photo was also criticised for its purported Brahmanical thought. However, it was later found that the photo was taken in a marriage hall in Coimbatore. The photo had been posted on Facebook along with other photos from the wedding by people who attended the event in Coimbatore.

The person who was in the picture also clarified the same on Facebook, "The photo on Facebook never mentions it was clicked in the IITM campus. Neither did they ask my permission to use my photo for a particular subject that they wanted to discuss. I am no way involved in the subject discussed either."

He also however said that the subject was a legit matter, "But with regards to the subject discussed, it is nothing but Brahminism only. It doesn’t matter where it exists. Problem matter is not the topic of food choice per se. Neither if the photo was clicked in IITM. It is just a symptom. The root is Brahminism and it exists everywhere."
