Harassed, denied leave to attend sister's wedding, Dharwad medico commits suicide at PGIMS hostel

In a shocking incident, Dr Omkar Baridabad (30) an MD paediatrics student at Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science in Rohtak, Haryana committed suicide. Omkar, who was allegedly harassed by his HOD at various occasions had hung himself in the hostel room at 11 pm on Thursday.

Hailing from Dharwad, he had planned to attend his sister's wedding which was to be held in a few days. However,  the college had denied him leave, which prompted him to take this decision, said the Rohtak Police. They also said that Omkar had not left any suicide note. He also hadn't held anyone responsible for his death.

Kailash Chander, Rohtak Station House Officer mentioned that the young doctor was allegedly harassed by the HOD Dr Geeta Gathwala. She has been booked under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment to suicide. But there has been no arrest made till now. He said, "The relatives and friends of Omkar have alleged that he was not given leave and was insulted by the HOD several times in the institute. Further investigations are on and we are trying to find out if there were any other reasons for his suicide."

Meanwhile, parents and his siblings are yet to reach Rohtak and take his body by completing several formalities. After the news was out, the colleagues of Omkar attacked Dr Geeta's house,  protesting to seek justice.
