A first-year Civil Engineering student at Audisankara Engineering College in Gudur here committed suicide in her hostel room in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday after her roommate suspected her of stealing a mobile phone. The deceased was identified as Akkupalli Madhavi from Madamala village of Srikalahasti Mandal in Chittoor district.

Madhavi's roommate lost her mobile phone recently and informed college authorities who then called Madhavi's father and told him they suspected her of the threat. Feeling humiliated at her father's admonishment by the college management, she ended her life. She hanged herself in the toilet of the hostel on Sunday midnight using her chunni.

Following a  complaint lodged by the hostel authorities, Gudur rural police registered a case. Following the incident, ABVP activists staged a protest in front of the college demanding a detailed probe. They said though there was no evidence, she was wrongly accused and also humiliated.

ABVP divisional secretary Manoj demanded appropriate action against college officials. Chillakur SI Srinivasulu rushed to the spot. Investigation is on.
