Here's all you must know about Hyderabad Public School, where the CEOs of Microsoft, Adobe and Mastercard Studied

EdexLive Desk

Almost a hundred years ago, in 1923, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad established a school in Hyderabad exclusively for the sons of nawabs, jagirdars and other aristocrats and elites. Years later, the school boasts of its alumni, that extends from Satya Nadella to Shantanu Narayen to Ajaypal Singh Banga. Not just them, a few other alumni of the school include Diana Hayden, Harsha Bhogle and Asaduddin Owaisi. Interesting enough, the CEO trio studied in different grades in the same school during the same time.

Talking about the school in his book Hit Refresh talks extensively about the school. He says, "Shantanu Narayen, the CEO of Adobe; Ajay Singh Banga, the CEO of MasterCard; Syed B Ali, head of Cavium Networks; Prem Watsa, founder of Fairfax Financial Holdings in Toronto; parliament leaders, film stars, athletes, academics, and writers -- all came from this small, out-of-the-way school."

But the description apparently was erroneous and did cause a lot of debate a year back, when it was released. "Maybe it was a fact-check oversight, but that description of the old school is quite incorrect. HPS is not small, being an expanse of more than 150 acres, and certainly not out-of-the-way, being where Hyderabad and Secunderabad meet," says an article in The New Indian Express.

Following The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE, ISC), the school, that is located in Begumpet in Hyderabad is managed by the Hyderabad Public School Society and the Board of Governors. It was called the Jagidars College till 1951, after the abolition of the Zamindari system.

Rating game

The school has also had many accolades and recognitions to boast about. According to the Education World rating, it was ranked first in Telangana and Hyderabad and sixth in India in the Co-ed Day-cum-Boarding Schools category for 2018-19. In 2018, at the GTF Education Summit & Awards conducted by Global Triumph foundation in New Delhi, The Hyderabad Public School was honoured as India's Best Standalone Senior Secondary School and Best Innovative K-12 School. Also, the school was selected in the list of 'great places to study' by the Global League Institute based on the Student Satisfaction Survey. The honour was awarded by the British House of Commons.
