Shashi Tharoor on Padmavati row: Focus of Rajasthan's female literacy instead of queens of centuries ago

EdexLive Desk

Prominent MP and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor two days ago joined in on the #PadmavatiGhoongat rage that has been simmering on social media. Jumping no guns and cruising to the point, Tharoor,  minced no words as he tweeted, amid the many posts teetering between medieval 'values' and beliefs regarding 'respectful Rajput women' that female literacy and not ghoongat should be given importance.

The furore rose after several critics and Rajput communities referred to Deepika Padukone's attire in the song "Ghoomar" from her upcoming movie Padmavati, based on the life of Queen Padmavati of Chittor as indecent exposure. Women groups, royal families and even politicians have alleged that the film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali distorts facts and maligns the Rajpur queen and her community.
