JEE Main Mathematics 2027: What the past four years' papers reveal about difficulty, important chapters and preparation priorities

An analysis of four JEE Main Mathematics papers from 2022 to 2025 reveals the types of questions candidates should prepare for, the chapters deserving greater attention and why conceptual clarity could be crucial in 2027.

For JEE Main aspirants, Mathematics is not always about knowing the right formula. Often, the real challenge lies in identifying which concept to apply, connecting different mathematical ideas and completing calculations without losing valuable examination time.

With preparations for JEE Main 2027 gradually gathering pace, an examination of previous years' Mathematics question papers offers useful insights into how students can approach the subject.

EdexLive examined four JEE Main papers, taking one shift each from 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, to understand the nature of questions, the chapters represented and the problem-solving skills required.

Note: The papers considered for this analysis were June 25, 2022 (Shift 2), April 10, 2023 (Set 142), April 8, 2024 (Shift 1) and January 28, 2025 (Shift 1).

While four individual shifts cannot establish the overall difficulty of every JEE Main session, the selected papers provide a useful picture of the different mathematical abilities candidates are expected to demonstrate.

JEE Main Mathematics Difficulty Level Trends

JEE Main Mathematics: Has the difficulty level increased?

A comparison of the four papers does not establish a consistent year-on-year increase in difficulty. However, the questions examined suggest that Mathematics requires a combination of conceptual understanding, calculation skills and the ability to handle multi-step problems.

The 2022 paper included questions on quadratic equations, complex numbers, limits, differential equations, binomial expansion, sequences and series, and coordinate geometry.

For instance, one question required candidates to determine the area enclosed between two parabolas, while another involved solving a differential equation. Such questions required students to identify the appropriate mathematical approach before carrying out calculations.

The 2023 paper also featured questions involving trigonometric identities, functions, differentiation and integration. The paper tested both familiarity with mathematical concepts and the ability to apply them under examination conditions.

In the April 2024 paper, questions involving complex numbers, logarithmic expressions and the behaviour of functions required candidates to examine mathematical properties rather than depend entirely on direct substitution.

The January 28, 2025, Shift 1 paper offered further examples of this approach.

One question involved a recurrence relation in sequences and series, while another required candidates to work with an arithmetic progression under multiple conditions.

The paper also contained a problem involving a trapezium whose vertices lie on a parabola, with the area to be determined using the information provided.

Another question involved finding the sum of local minimum values of a piecewise-defined function, requiring students to examine the behaviour of the function over different intervals.

These examples suggest that students preparing for 2027 should not equate familiarity with a chapter with the ability to solve every question from it.

A chapter may appear straightforward during revision, but a question combining several conditions can become significantly more demanding.

Mathematics Topics Presence in JEE Main Exam

Which chapters deserve first priority for JEE Main Mathematics 2027?

Based on the question types identified in the four papers, calculus and algebra emerge as sensible starting points for intensive preparation.

First priority: Calculus and algebra

Calculus is represented through questions involving limits, differentiation, integration, areas between curves, differential equations and the behaviour of functions.

The 2025 paper, for example, included a piecewise-function problem requiring candidates to identify local minima. Another question involved an integral, while a numerical-answer question tested continuity and differentiability.

These questions demonstrate why students must understand how functions behave rather than simply memorise differentiation and integration formulae.

In algebra, the papers include questions involving sequences and series, quadratic equations, complex numbers, matrices, binomial expansion and combinatorial reasoning.

The 2025 paper featured two consecutive questions involving sequences and series, including recurrence relations and arithmetic progressions. It also included a numerical-answer question involving matrices.

Candidates should therefore focus on building a strong foundation in these chapters and practise problems involving multiple conditions.

However, this first-priority classification is a preparation recommendation based on the breadth and complexity of identifiable questions. It should not be interpreted as a verified ranking of chapter-wise weightage across all JEE Main shifts.

Second priority: Coordinate geometry, vectors and three-dimensional geometry

Coordinate geometry also deserves considerable attention.

The 2025 paper included a question involving a trapezium inscribed in a parabola, while another required candidates to examine geometrical statements about a triangle in three-dimensional space.

The numerical-answer section contained a problem involving an ellipse and another involving the distance between a point and a straight line.

The 2024 paper similarly included a question involving the equations of two sides of a triangle and an internal division ratio.

These problems illustrate how coordinate geometry can require students to translate geometrical information into algebraic equations.

Vectors and three-dimensional geometry also require familiarity with mathematical relationships, direction ratios, cross products and spatial reasoning.

Students should practise these chapters regularly rather than leaving them entirely for the final weeks before the examination.

Third priority: Probability, statistics, permutations and combinations, and trigonometry

The sampled papers also contain questions involving probability, counting principles, statistical reasoning and trigonometric expressions.

In the 2025 paper, one question asked candidates to calculate the variance associated with a selection problem involving defective and non-defective oranges.

Another required candidates to count the number of five-digit numbers satisfying a restriction on the sum of the first and last digits.

The paper also contained a trigonometric expression involving inverse trigonometric functions.

The 2022 paper included a probability problem involving dice, while the 2023 paper contained questions involving trigonometric relationships.

These examples show that even familiar topics can demand careful interpretation.

Although these chapters have been placed in the third preparation group, students should not treat them as optional. The selected papers are too limited to establish that these topics will receive fewer questions in JEE Main 2027.

How should candidates plan their Mathematics preparation?

Students can begin by strengthening calculus and algebra, particularly functions, differentiation, integration, sequences and series, complex numbers and matrices.

Coordinate geometry, vectors and three-dimensional geometry should be practised alongside these chapters, rather than treated as subjects to be completed only after the rest of the syllabus.

Probability, statistics, permutations and combinations, and trigonometry should remain part of regular revision.

Candidates should also practise previous-year questions under timed conditions. After each practice session, reviewing incorrect answers can help distinguish conceptual gaps from calculation errors and time-management difficulties.

Most importantly, students should avoid preparing exclusively from predicted high-weightage chapters. A single shift cannot establish how many questions a particular chapter will receive in a future examination.
