University of Calicut to start courses exclusively for tribal students

For the first time in the state, the University of Calicut is planning to start a degree, postgraduate degree, MPhil and PhD courses in Zoology, Botany, Malayalam and Commerce exclusively for tribal students. The programmes will be offered at the Institute of Tribal Studies and Research functioning under the varsity in Chethalayam, Wayanad. At present, the centre offers a degree in Sociology and training in civil service to students.

The varsity authorities are also planning to undertake development and renovation activities to a tune of Rs.575 lakh, at the institute. As part of the activities, the academic block of the institute will be developed and the functioning of men’s hostel will commence. University vice-chancellor K Mohammed Basheer will inaugurate the development works at 10 am on Saturday.
