Negotiation is important and it can pave the way for greater success. Here's how

Nicholas Francis

Negotiation plays a very important role in career development. It is not a one-way deal in which a candidate will have to blindly accept what is being offered by the employers, but instead a reasonable conversation that can pave way for greater success.

Recruiters and employers seek clarity of mind and conviction from an individual who aspires to become a prospective employee of their respective organisations. The employment scenario will largely present itself with numerous permutations and combinations calling for focused attention on the part of the candidate to understand the terms and conditions that come with the job offer. In most cases, there would be scope for open discussions between the prospective employee and employer. It is on part of the candidate to take notice of the space for discussions and take the initiative to get clarity on everything that is in the offer letter. If they fail to do so, it is up to them to abide by whatever is outlined. This will eventually result in stress in the job environment which could be detrimental to career development.

The best way out to overcome such a situation is to recognise the concept of ‘negotiation’ and make use of it to maximise the success quotient. The following points will help you understand the importance of negotiation and will be useful in your career development:

When you negotiate, you express your core values in terms of your abilities to the employers, which will make them sensitised towards the same.

Negotiation will also convey that you have a flexible personality. Rigidity will not be well received by the employers at any cost.

Negotiation can also save you from possible embarrassment later on.

It can actually help you to also understand the way the company operates, while you negotiate on the terms and conditions.

Before negotiating, read the terms and conditions carefully and try to understand what is expressed in it.
