CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is set to modernise its legal education and administrative systems with a series of technology-driven initiatives, comprising online examination valuation at Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU), a dedicated legal code web portal and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre for law students.
Law Minister R Nirmalkumar made the announcements while responding to the debate on the demands for grants for his department in the Assembly on Friday.
As part of the overhaul of the examination system, TNDALU will introduce end-to-end examination automation and online valuation. The digital system will cover the entire examination process, from student registration and hall-ticket generation to valuation and publication of results.
The State will also launch a Tamil Nadu Code Web Portal, which will bring together laws, rules, government orders and other legal documents on a single online platform.
From the 2026-27 academic year, two-year LLM programmes will be launched at government law colleges in Chennai, Namakkal, Theni and Karaikudi. Two additional faculty positions will be created at each of these institutions.
At Tamil Nadu National Law University in Tiruchy, the government plans to construct a 606-student hostel equipped with study rooms and other facilities.
Infrastructure upgrades have also been planned across 12 government law colleges. The institutions will receive reverse osmosis (RO) systems, benefiting around 14,926 students, along with CCTV cameras to enhance security.
The Law Department will transition to an e-office system, allowing files to be processed and moved electronically with the aim of reducing delays. Libraries under the department will also be upgraded with additional legal resources.
A major technology initiative will be the establishment of an AI Centre at the School of Excellence in Law on the TNDALU campus. The centre is expected to cater to nearly 30,000 students studying at TNDALU, government law colleges and affiliated private institutions.
The government will further introduce an online certificate-issuing system for law students and teachers, alongside measures to strengthen library infrastructure across legal education institutions.
