Under Karnataka's School Adoption Programme 1,500 schools taken by ministers, MLAs and private universities so far

After the Karnataka Government introduced The School Adoption Programme, which is a one-of-its-kind initiative, as many as 1500 government schools have been adopted. This programme was introduced for the development of the basic infrastructure of the school and attract more kids towards the government school rather than shutting them down. 

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has adopted around 10 schools which are under his constituency, Shikaripura in Shivamogga. Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol has adopted five schools in Mudhol in Bagalkot district. B Sriramulu, Social Welfare Minister, Suresh Kumar S, Primary and Secondary Education Minister and other MLCs have also adopted five government schools each. It may be recalled that Yediyurappa had stressed about the adoption of government schools by MLAs in their respective constituencies during his budget announcement for 2020-21. Aside this, a total of 34 government and private universities in Karnataka have adopted schools for the development of infrastructure. 

According to the Department of Public Education, Currently, there are 44,615 government  primary schools, 5,240 government high schools and 1,229 government pre-university colleges serving over 50 lakh students from class 1 to 12. While the schools are being adopted by ministers, what can one do under the development? The term of development after adopting these schools is three years and one can build compound walls, toilets, smart classrooms, provide safe drinking water, appoint additional teachers to teach specific subjects and so on.
