Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu is in favour of providing education in mother tongue. While addressing the students who received their degrees at the 20th annual convocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru held on Thursday, Naidu said, “We must focus on speaking in our mother tongue.

If you are from Karnataka, then speak in Kannada at home, as well as with the person who knows how to speak the language. Educating someone in their mother tongue helps to articulate things better.”

Going a step further, he said that he would like to see all courses being offered in regional language of that particular state. “I would like to see all the courses, from primary to higher education, being offered in mother tongue,” he mentioned. Naidu advised medical graduates to excel in local language and to get familiar with patients and the society.

He started his speech in Kannada and later switched to English. His opening remarks in Kannada received applause from parents and students gathered in the event.

Mandatory rural service

In his address to medical graduates, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu said that serving in rural areas should be made mandatory. “I am discussing with health ministers of all states to make rural service mandatory for all medicos before their first promotion,” he mentioned. Naidu also expressed his unhappiness over youngsters preferring to go abroad. “There are people who go abroad and settle there. I am not  saying you should not go. Go, earn, learn and return back to India. When your family is here, you must enjoy life with them instead of enjoying alone abroad,” he said.
