The Univerity of Hyderabad's student union is planning a massive protest on Friday noon to revoke the suspension of 10 students, who were suspended for alleged misconduct and manhandling of staff, and to reclaim a space for dissent. One of their main arguments is that the deposition, which was decided after a hasty meeting on Saturday- a non-working day, was slated for Sunday when students were appearing for their NET exams.
In a circular, the union condemns the management's action which was driven forth without proof or a copy of the complaint, and also calls out the misuse of power and inappropriate behaviour with female students in particular. It also alleges that one of the wardens hurled abuses at female hostel residents while in an "inebriated state".
On November 3, a council of wardens visited a hostel room at midnight on a "hostel visit" and has charged ten students with misconduct after receiving backlash for such an untimely and uncoordinated visit. The issue was dragged further into the mud when the council brought in the police to deal with questioning students.
Of the ten students, three have "been accorded with two years academic and lifelong hostel suspension whereas the other seven have been given six months academic and lifelong hostel suspension". The protest will commence at 2 pm on Friday at Velivada.
