While the flood has ravaged the houses and properties of thousands of people across the state, it has also carried away with it the month-long hard work of umpteen students. School notes and projects compiled by several students have been washed away in the rains and a majority are worried of the time and effort they will have to pitch in to re-write or take photocopies of the notes.

Even as help in various forms is pouring in from all quarters, Kozhikode -based NGO ‘Incubation’, has launched a novel initiative to provide a solution to students who have lost their written notes in the deluge. Named ‘Together We Can’, the drive aims to distribute handwritten and completed notebooks to school students from classes V to X, across the state. “ We were figuring out ways to support students who have been afflicted in the rains, “ said Jaseed P Beeran, one of the district programme coordinators. “ Initially we launched a drive to collect blank notebooks for students. But the response was quite low. However, when we heard from students that it would be great if they could get completed notes, we decided to come out with the initiative ‘Together We Can’," he said.

The initiative started off with just a handful of people writing notes for students. But, as word spread through social media platforms, more volunteers including children, housewives, senior citizens, and service-oriented organisation from across the state started contributing towards the drive. “ The volunteers gathered at various centres and collected completed and well-written notebooks from students, that have not been destroyed in the rains. Using these, they copied down to blank notebooks, "he added. The notes have been written based on the Kerala syllabus. So far, the NGO has managed to gather 6000 completed notebooks and 25,000 blank notebooks. The books will be distributed to schools across the state within the week. Apart from notebooks, pens, pencils, instrument boxes and other necessary school items will also be distributed to students.
