Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandrasekhar on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new G+2 building with 12 additional classrooms at the Government Degree College for Women in Guntur.

The project is estimated to cost Rs 1.98 crore and will be funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds sanctioned by Coal India Limited. Local MLA Mohammed Naseer Ahmed was also present at the foundation-laying ceremony.

Chandrasekhar highlighted the role of the college in providing higher education to women from economically weaker backgrounds. More than 2,500 female students from poor and middle-class families are currently pursuing higher education at the institution, he said.

The additional classrooms are expected to expand the college's academic infrastructure and provide more teaching space as student enrolment continues.

The project is a CSR funding initiative with Coal India supporting the construction.
