A 50-year-old college professor was arrested for cheating 12 persons on the pretext of offering government jobs in Dindigul on Wednesday night, June 25.

The professor got around Rs 18 lakh for these individuals for the past two years, stated a report by The New Indian Express.

According to a police source, Shyamala Devi (50) a native of Nilakottai, was working as professor in a government arts and science college in Reddiyarchatram. She approached a government bus conductor, Selvaraj, who sought a government job for himself.

Shyamala Devi claimed that she had wide contacts and promised jobs and sought money for each category of job.

Believing her words, Selvaraj informed many others, who also gave money to Shyamala Devi. Over a period of time, the group gave over Rs 18 lakh.

On the other hand, Shyamala Devi gave appointment orders from Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) and other departments to these individuals. But, the individuals found it to be fake.

They sought to recover their money, but Shyamala Devi employed delaying tactics, according to the report by The New Indian Express.

As a result, the group filed a complaint with the District Crime Branch a few weeks ago. Based on the evidence and other records, District Crime Branch (DCB) arrested Shyamal Devi and remanded her to custody.
