Things may not be the same for quite some time for the college and university students in India, as they return to their classes soon. While a lot of them eagerly looked forward to study tours and field visits, the UGC has asked the institutions to give them a miss for a while considering the COVID-19 pandemic. The educational institutions in the country were closed in March, owing to the pandemic.

"Universities and colleges should prepare a policy for restricting the outside experts on campuses, study tours, field works etc, keeping in mind the COVID-19 situation," reads the UGC guidelines for reopening colleges and universities. Until a little while ago it was difficult to picture a college campus devoid of cultural gatherings and meetings. However, until the pandemic is contained, they are asked to avoid cultural activities and meetings.

In what may seem like a relief, sporting activities are exempted from this restriction. "Such extracurricular and sports activities may be allowed where physical distancing is feasible and is in accordance with the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines, issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 from time to time," reads the UGC guidelines issued on November 5.

It has also issued regulations about reopening auditoriums and seminar halls. "Ensure the norms of physical distancing, sanitisation and hygienic conditions for use of common facilities — auditorium, conference or seminar halls, sports, gymnasium, canteen, parking area," it reads.
