The Central Board of Secondary Education told the Supreme Court on Thursday that the Class 10 and 12 board examinations scheduled to be held in July now stand cancelled.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the CBSE informed the SC that there will be no further examination for Class 10, however, the Class 12 students will be provided with an option to appear for the exams or there will be a scheme for an assessment to be made based on their performance in past three exams. This scheme will be notified latest by June 26.

Following suit,  the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)  also cancelled the Class 10, 12 examinations, for now, stating that the decision on conducting the Class 12 exam in future, will be taken later.

The Supreme Court had been hearing a plea filed by the parents of CBSE Class 12 students who asked for the cancellation of the remaining board exams instead of conducting them in July, in view of the Coronavirus situation in the country. The top court then had directed the central board to file a reply on this and had posted the matter for hearing on Tuesday, June 23. However, the education board had informed the SC bench that the discussion is at an advanced stage now and they need another day to come to a conclusion.

In April, the CBSE had notified about the remaining examinations stating it will be conducted for only 29 papers and the rest would be cancelled. The schedule for the remaining examinations was announced in May.

The announcement of the CBSE exams being scrapped is also likely to impact the admission process of all central universities as well as the national entrance exams including JEE Main and NEET 2020.
