The Pondicherry University administration issued a circular appealing to passed out students to donate their caution deposit to the University funds since they are facing a cash crunch. This was not received well by the Students Federation of India who condemned the University’s move to request funds from the students. SFI called the circular ‘ironic’.

The circular said that the University was facing a cash crunch as the money coming in from UGC was not enough to carry out all the academic activities. The administration said that the donation would help them mobilise academic activities. In response, the SFI pointed out that all the departments are functioning online and those who can afford it are availing it from home. 

“The financial crisis is an outcome of the incompetencies of the administration. It is not the first time that the administration has passed on the burden of their incompetence and mismanagement on the student community,” the SFI said. 

The SFI also accused the administration of spending money unnecessarily, “The administration lavishly spends money to construct walls around administrative buildings and installing security cameras.” “Negating the possible options to manage the financial crunch, it is condemnable to appeal to students to donate their caution deposit when a pandemic is raging on. SFI urges students to not donate,” the AFI said in its statement.
