The Central Bureau of Investigation, on Wednesday, took over the investigation of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. This has however created a buzz on social media, after several celebrities, activists and students called out the investigation agency for closing the missing case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed. An MSc Biotechnology student, Najeeb went missing in October 2016, after allegedly getting into a scuffle the previous night.

The topic was first brought up by activist Saket Gokhale. "CBI never found Najeeb who went missing from JNU in 2016 after ABVP attacked him. Najeeb’s mother never received justice or even closure," he tweeted. This was soon picked up by many prominent names including actor Swara Bhaskar and academic Ashok Swain.

After 26 rounds of investigation, the CBI had closed the case stating that its efforts to trace him have yielded no results. There have been allegations from the family that this was due to political compulsions'. The agency had also announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for anyone giving information about Najeeb and informed police chiefs of all state police forces across the country.

As the Delhi Police remained clueless about Ahmed's whereabouts even after seven months of his missing, the probe was handed over to the CBI on May 16, 2017.
