The Students' Federation of India has called for a nationwide protest against the clash between the Left front youth activists and the police that left more than 500 protesters injured. Left front students, activists and youth participating in a March to the West Bengal Secretariat were severely injured after police and RAF deployed water canons and lathicharged on them on September 13 near the Howrah Station in West Bengal. The injured protesters were admitted to the Howrah State General Hospital. 

The Central Executive Committee of SFI condemned the atrocious behavior of the ruling TMC government and called for a country-wide protest on September 14. "This is to remind the governments enjoying their state power, the strength of our movements will not be surrendering to your violence," read a statement by the student organisation. 

The unarmed protesters were met with barricades and water cannons once they started their approach towards Nabanna from the Howrah Railway Station on Friday. "The police along with a fully equipped RAF team were waiting there to deal with the unarmed youth. Without any provocation they started lathi charge, fired tear shell and deployed the water cannon," said SFI General Secretary Mayukh Biswas. "More than 500 comrades including the SFI State Secretary and DYFI State Secretary were brutality beaten up and are currently admitted in different hospitals of the city," said Mayukh. But police sources said that the protesters had broken the barricades and were pelting stones at them and that's when they took action. 

Twelve leftist student organisations had come together along with SFI and DYFI to march from Singur to the new Secretariat building in Nabanna demanding affordable education and employment for all on September 12. They were scheduled to reach Nabanna on September 13.
