Teachers lock school inspector in Tripura after administration withholds salary for being absent from work

A group of aggrieved teachers in Tripura locked Inspector of School (IS), Gandacherra, Pragati Chakma inside his office for hours last evening under Dhalai district and later released with the intervention of local administration and police. The state government has ordered an enquiry into the incident. 

Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that such behaviour was unbecoming of the teachers and it gave a bad message to the society. However, the department was asked to have detailed enquiry into the incident and accordingly appropriate action would be taken, he asserted.

According to the report, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) administration had withheld the salary of as many as 29 teachers posted in distant parts of Gandacherra when they were found absent in the duty during an inspection last month.

Initially, they were served show-cause notice but their replies were not satisfactory to the authority. Accordingly, seven of them were asked to avail their accorded leave and rest 22 had no leave in their credit. As a result, the salary was deducted, of their absence which enraged them. Allegedly, the angry teachers yesterday afternoon went to meet Inspector of School (IS), Gandacherra Pragati Chakma but according to them, he misbehaved with them.

The teachers claimed that they could not attend schools because they moved out for election duty but it was not substantiated. Later, he was released after a Deputy Collector rushed to the spot and rescued him after giving assurance that all the show caused teachers will get a salary at the earliest.
