The students lodged at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Government Hostel in Belagavi launched an agitation in protest against the alleged substandard food that they are being served. The agitation went on for two days.

The protesters said that there is no professional cook at the hostel and the food served to them lacks in both quality and taste. They also claimed that the food is cooked in the open. The students also said that there is no security in the hostel and three students had their cell phones stolen while one lost 5000 rupees. "There are no CCTV cameras in the hostel campus. We are about 350 students here and we feel very unsafe," a student said.

As they sat in dharna outside their hostel, the authorities attached to the Social Welfare Department tried to negotiate with them. But the students were unwilling to withdraw the protest until and unless a new professional cook was hired and CCTV cameras were installed at the hostel.
