IIT-BHU students have come out in support of around 200 protesting non-teaching staff who were told that their services were no longer required as the administration had decided to hire a new contractor. 

The employees have been protesting since 6 am on July 1, demanding that they should be enrolled as permanent staff and provided medical facilities and other such amenities and have submitted a letter with to this effect to the administration. "In an institution like IIT-BHU, it is not just illegal but also embarrassing that most of the non-academic employees are taken out and replaced whenever a contractor changes every few years. The administration does not even have permanent posts for the cleaning staff," alleged a statement by Students For Change (SFC), a student organisation of the institute. "Our fees have been bumped up to Rs 3 lakh, but the administration still does not want to take any responsibility of its employees. The contractors provide no medical facility to their employees nor can their children study in BHU's school. They do not have any proof that they work in IIT-BHU," the statement further added.

The SFC supports all of their demands. "They work so hard for us and in return, they neither get proper wages nor any other facility that everyone should get to live a respectable life," said Vandana, a member of the SFC. "We appeal to all the students of IIT-BHU and every responsible citizen, that they also came in support of these helpless people because it is our responsibility to stand for them," she added.
