Hundreds of students of Delhi University associated with AISA and students of Assam burned copies of the Citizenship Amendment Bill on Thursday after it was approved by both houses of the parliament. The protest was also against the situations in Assam and Tripura.

Now that the bill has become an Act, these activists are planning to conduct a 'Mashaal Juloos' or a torch rally in protest. "We are expecting larger participation from organisations like Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party," says Amarjeet Kumar Singh, a member of DU AISA. "There is also a march from Jamia Milia Islamia to the parliament in protest today," he says. Parallelly, the members of the Delhi University Teachers' Association are also protesting the bill.

"CAB has been brought by the RSS-BJP to further the agenda of a Hindu Rashtra of the Sangh Parivar. Amit Shah is no one to tell us whether we are citizens of this country or not," says Madhurima Kunda, DU AISA Secretary. "The country will not accept citizenship on religious grounds. we also condemn the state repression Assam on protestors," she says.

The bill which was cleared by the Union Cabinet on December 4 was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 10 and Rajya Sabha on December 11. After President Ramnath Kovind's approval, it finally became an Act on December 12.
