A 17-year-old student of a popular college in the city committed suicide on Tuesday at his residence in Urwa. Neville Fernandes, a first PUC science student of Expert college in Mangalore, and the son of Ivan and Veena Fernandes from Chilimbi killed himself by hanging at home while his parents were away, said police sources. Neville had left back a death note confirming the cause of his death.

While there were no exams round the corner, the boy felt pressurized by studies, said police commissioner T R Suresh. He also said Neville was upset after an incident of love failure recently. "He approached a girl in his class and the girl complained to the college authorities who made him write an apology letter and suspended him from the college," Suresh added.

It is said the boy, the only child of the couple, was born and brought up in Goa and had recently shifted to Mangaluru for studies and was living in a hostel here. As per sources, Neville on the pretext of studies locked himself in his room. Police sources said the incident came to light only at midnight and the death note and evidence were submitted to the court.
