Ariyalur student's suicide sparks protests demanding professor's arrest

D Krishnamoorthy (18), a resident of Athanakurichi village in Ariyalur who consumed poison died on September 17 and his relatives took to protest outside the Thalavai Police Station in Sendurai, Ariyalur demanding action against the professor who had allegedly slapped him earlier which led him to commit suicide.

A professor of the polytechnic college in Thozhuvur, Cuddalore, where Krishnamoorty was a student, had slapped him in front of the whole class on September 8 for being absent for the previous two days. This was allegedly the reason behind Krishnamoorty consuming poison the same day after he returned home. His relatives said that Krishnamoorthy was attending a wedding back in his hometown and missed classes on September 6 and 7.

He was taken to the Villupuram Government Hospital, from where he was redirected to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai for further treatment. On September 17, at 12 am, Krishnamoorty died despite the treatment. After his death the relatives demonstrated outside the Thalavai Police Station in Sendurai, Ariyalur demanding the arrest of the said professor. Only after the police promised action, the crowd dispersed.
