Ten students were injured when a part of their school building collapsed in Vanur taluk near Villupuram on Wednesday. While there have been no serious injuries, the school authorities and parents are enraged because the school had allegedly repeatedly complained to the government about the repairs but got no help.

On Wednesday, the students had gathered for the morning prayer around 9 am in the verandah area of the school, when a part of the roof gave away. Most students escaped but about ten students were injured and were taken to the Primary Health Care Centre. Most of the students had been discharged from the hospital with minor injuries. 

The Panchayat Union Primary School in Keezhkothapakkam near Kiliyanur in Vanur taluk houses students from class one to class five and has a total strength of 94 students. The building which is over 40-years-old had been falling apart for the last few years and the school had repeatedly written to local government offices to conduct repairs. The last time the school got any renovation done was in 2004 for the cost of 1.5 lacs.

However, in the last ten years, the school has had trouble with water leaking through the roof and different parts of the building had weakened. The school had also sent photographs to the officials who turned a blind eye. 

While the school declared a holiday, the parents of the school protested and demanded the school shut down till the needful repairs were made.
