As various arts and science colleges reopened in the city on Monday, the police briefly detained around 110 college students for creating a public nuisance in buses and other public places.

Besides, six students were arrested as they were found carrying sickles and swords on their way to college.

We have already issued circulars to all colleges to monitor the behaviour of the students as the college reopens. On Monday, we posted police personnel at various important junctions, said a senior police officer.

Most of the detained college students belong to Pachaiyappa's College, Ambedkar Government Arts College, Nandanam Arts College and Presidency College. Police officers said the misbehaviour included climbing on to of the buses, singing loudly, and scaring other motorists on the road.

The Principal of Nandanam Arts College, Dr R Prabakaran, came on his own and on behalf of the students, promised that such incidents will not happen in the future and took back the students from the police stations concerned, said the senior police officer.

While all these students were let off after a warning and the undertakings given by their parents, six of the students, who were carrying arms, were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Four of them were caught near the Central Railway station and two near the Anna Square bus stop.
