In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old school teacher from Viluppuram, who is already married, asked one of his students, studying in the seventh standard, to marry him on Valentine's Day — her angry relatives then proceeded to beat him to within an inch of losing his life until the police managed to rescue him.

Nirmal, who works at St Antony's High School in Melnariyappanur Village, has been detained along with two other teachers who acted as his wingmen. The two men had allegedly tried to convince the girl to accept the proposal by claiming that Nirmal hails from a rich family and could give her a luxurious life if she married him.

The proposal took place on Valentine's Day when the married teacher compelled the girl to accept a rose and a greeting card.

However, that did not work and the girl, who was disgusted with the proposal, shunned him. She didn't even tell her parents fearing they may discontinue her studies and had informed only a few friends.

Eventually, the word spread and local villagers and the relatives of school girl got to know about the incident. The mob attacked Nirmal on Monday who was rescued by the local police, only to be detained for the act.
