Kerala's Nehru College students allege conspiracy behind failure in practical exam

Three students of Nehru College, Pampady, have levelled conspiracy allegations against the college management and the staff, saying the latter 'corrected' their marks in the practical exam which led to them failing in it.

Athul Jose, Wasim Sha and Muhammad Ashiq, who are pursuing Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) course from the college, alleged the management, with the help of the staff, took the step as revenge against the students' participation in protests following the death of first-year engineering student Jishnu Pranoy.

“We were marked as 'fail' in the Pharmacology 2 paper,” said Athul. “However, the reply to our RTI query revealed the marks were corrected after the exam and the signature near the corrected mark was of the internal examiner when usually, it is signed by an external examiner,” he said.

Wasim alleged the 20 marks he got in a practical exam were corrected to 16 and his total marks were corrected from 33 to 29. The management cited 'spot viva' for the correction in the marks, but the students allege such a viva never took place during the practical exams.

Refuting the students' allegations, a section of staff members said everything was as per norms and no such irregularities took place in the correction of marks.

SFI central committee member Sarath Prasad said the students' outfit will launch a series of protests demanding the removal of such teachers from the college.

“The students had filed a petition before the Kerala University of Health Sciences and the latter agreed to re-conduct the practical exam. However, we also want action against teachers who stood with the management in spoiling the students' future,” Sarath said.

The three students had been at the forefront of protests demanding proper probe into the death of Pranoy, who was found hanging inside his hostel bathroom on January 6. Later, the same students failed in the exams held in December last year and June this year. The CBI is probing Pranoy's death.
