The unemployed youth in Vijayawada who completed their Diploma in Veterinary Sciences, in an act of protest, climbed a water tank and cut their wrists with blades and demanded the state government to announce the Veterinary Assistant posts in order to fill up the vacancies in the state.

About 70 unemployed youth from across the state staged a protest in front of Veterinary Director's office and eight of them climbed a water tank with syringes, blades, and kerosene bottles located opposite to the Veterinary Director's office.

AP Veterinary Polytechnic Unemployed Union members Shankar Pinnanti, Ravikiran, Sumati, Anusham Mayuri also climbed the top of the tank along with the blades, syringes, and kerosene bottles and demanded the government to announce the posts after threatening to jump from the top of the tank.

According to the information received from the locals, police came to the spot and CI of Machavaram Police station, Sahera Begam, spoke to the youth who were protesting at the base of the tank and finally the youth who climbed the top of the tank came down.

While the police were trying to reason with the leaders of the union, some of the other students injured their hand with the blades. Later the police arrested the youth and shifted them to Patamata and Machavaram Police stations.

The president of the union, K Jayaram said, "There are as many as 600 vacant posts of Veterinary assistants are there in the department, and till the date, they were not yet filled."

He further demanded the government to fill all the vacant posts in the Veterinary Department in the permanent system and to increase the duration of the Diploma course from two years to three years.
