When Sarmistha Dey was born, it was raining heavily so her grandmother, who was a writer, nicknamed her Rainy Sarmistha, a name that she goes by till date. Since then, Sarmistha has always felt a deep connection with rain and nature. As a true nature lover, she would often find herself among greenery, something she still does, and pen her best poems there. Till date, most of her poems draw themes from nature's bounty.
Now, Sarmistha, who is originally from Cuttack, has settled in Gurugram. She started Writing Squad, her own content writing start-up and their team of five contributes to Musafir.com, Yatra, and other companies. Despite this, Sarmistha continues to pen poetry regularly. And it was because of her grandmother, Basanti Mohapatra, that she was inspired and continues to tread the path of poetry. "She was a very modern lady and always used to guide me," says the poet, who mostly writes in English and occasionally in Odia too. Her poetry has even been published in Poetry Planet, Amaravati Poetic Prism, Healing Planet, The Bhubaneswar Review and other journals. We ask her when we can expect her own book and she takes a moment to mull over the idea before saying, "Perhaps I'm waiting for the right moment."
Sarmistha, who is a former hotelier, also writes about the universe and love as well and claims that she has no method to her madness. "Poetry for me is just a pure feeling that comes from within. It's a very spontaneous process for me," says Sarmistha, who likes travelling (most nature lovers do) and exploring different cultures, something she intends to do more often. She also feels that self-belief is an important component of success, something she continues to maintain within herself as well.
