The postgraduate counselling for medical admissions for this academic year are likely to begin after the Supreme Court order on 50 per cent reservation for service doctors in PG admissions on April 12.“The admissions will be based on the outcome of the SC order. If the order is not in favour of the State, the State will conduct the admissions based on Postgraduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2018, of the Medical Council of India,” said a senior Health Department official.

Various government doctors’ associations, including The Tamil Nadu Medical Officers’ Association, filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking the court’s direction to the Central government to restore 50 per cent reservation for service doctors in PG medical admissions. “The rank list will be released after the SC order on April 12,” the senior official added.Meanwhile, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan held a meeting with members of the Tamil Nadu Medical Officers’ Association on the 50 per cent reservation issue at the Secretariat 

Express learnt the State is planning to introduce a separate Bill for 50 per cent reservation for service doctors in PG admissions if the SC order is not in favour of the State. “But the State can introduce the Bill only in the Assembly session. The selection committee would proceed with the PG counselling as per the prospectus this year. The 50 per cent reservation for service doctors would be followed from next academic year, if the Bill is passed,” a source said.
