Art teacher from Kumbakonam burns national flag over Cauvery dispute, arrested

A private school teacher, who burnt the national flag as a protest against the BJP led Union Government's refusal to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) even after Supreme Court's orders, was arrested on Saturday night near Kumbakonam.

According to sources, M Prabhu (34) of Madha Koil street in Pudhupadaiyur near Kumbakonam has been working as a painting teacher of a school and has been associated with the Tamil nationalist outfit "Tamil Desiya Periyakkam". As the deadline fixed by the Supreme Court for forming the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) passed and the BJP led Union Government failed to follow the apex court's order, a spontaneous protest broke out throughout the state.

Prabhu who was outraged by the Union Government's flouting of the apex court's order and burnt the national flag which was recorded on a mobile phone. The recording went viral. In the recording, Prabhu says as a protest for Union Government's usurpation of the rights of Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water, he was burning the national flag.

He alleged the Union Government has been depriving the rights of Tamil over sea, land. He also said more the 600 Tamil fisherfolk were killed by the SriLankan Navy and the Union Government did not take steps to stop it but taking away the financial resources.

He also charged the Union Government for imposing ecologically destructive projects. He called upon the students, youth not to immolate themselves and burn the concept of India from their heart. He further added only a separate Tamil nation would be a solution.

He was seen burning the flag after his speech and raising slogans against the Union Government.Following the viral spread of the video the special police team led by Keerthivasan, Sub-Inspector of police rushed to Prabhu's house on the midnight of Saturday and arrested him.
