Rangeela's freemake is coming up and you need to watch out for the girl in the green hair aka Gayathri Gupta

Seema Rajpal

You might remember Gayathri Gupta from her role as Sai Pallavi's sidekick in Fidaa or from her fierce independent movie, Sita on the Road, in which she plays a docile housewife. But even if you don't, that's all right, because her next project will surely give her her due. The only snag is, will you be able to recognise her? A remake of RGV's iconic movie Rangeela is underway and Gupta has been chosen to play a singer and boy, has she gone through one crazy makeover. The glamorous, long-haired actor now sports green hair, a pixie cut and of course, high heels. "I am all of five feet and one inch tall and the crowd in the scene was huge! Everybody was dancing, it was quite embarrassing," says the actor as she laughs.

I started out by doing low budget films so that I can understand how to be resourceful

Gupta has never been the kind who is in any hurry to make it big in the industry. "It's my tenth year in the film industry and I have not done anything great in terms of output. I believe in slow progress," says the 33-year-old, adding that she did seven low-budget films before Fidaa fell into her lap. But she believes that joining the industry has been the best decision she has taken. "I feel I am better because of the industry; this line has really opened my eyes," she confesses. And while she also has a web series in her repertoire, the project that she is most excited about is her own. She has a movie in mind about misunderstood friendships with the working title Flat No 402, for which she wants to start crowdfunding. She may not be in a hurry to make it big, but that doesn’t mean that Gayathri's taking it lying down.
