Ruling Congress in Puducherry has announced its support and participation in the DMK-sponsored 'human chain' protest against the introduction of NEET-based selection for admission to medical courses.

President of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and Power Works Department (PWD) Minister A Namassivayam said that the Ministers, legislators, functionaries of different wings of the Congress and delegates of students, workers and other wings of the party would join hands with the DMK to stage a protest here on July 27.

He alleged the introduction of NEET system was a "clear attempt to deprive the states of their rights to decide the mode of selection." "No time was given to students and unnecessary chaos has been caused shattering the aspirations of the pupils particularly from government schools and rural areas to pursue medical courses," he added.

The Puducherry government has already sought to exempt the Union Territory for three years from the NEET system in the larger interest of the students and a resolution adopted in the Assembly in this connection had also been forwarded to the Centre for its nod.

"Nothing had been heard so far and students are in a quandary with authorities going ahead with their plan for admission," Namassivayam said after announcing the party's participation in the human chain protest. DMK is an alliance partner of the Congress here and extends support to the government from outside.
