Led by the Students Union, a large number of students came out to protest on Wednesday, that is, January 29, at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Tarnaka, Hyderabad. They boycotted classes and even took out a protest rally in the campus. Thus, EFLU issued a circular holding in abeyance various decisions that were taken by the Standing Committee of Academic Council of the varsity regarding PhD admissions, registration for MA courses and evaluation of subjects in various courses.   

The protest was in response to a circular released by the univAfter student protests, EFLU puts bell curve grading system and other rules on standbyersity on Tuesday, regarding the decisions taken by Standing Committee of the Academic Council, which were to come into effect from the ongoing academic term.

The various decisions taken by Standing Committee of Academic Council included exemption from the written exam for PhD for candidates holding UGC JRF, limiting the intake of all MA courses to 30, starting the Bell curve grading system for all courses, making sit-in examination the major mode of evaluation for all courses among others.

In a statement issued by the EFLU Students Union, they put forward various arguments against these new regulations brought in by the Standing Committee. They argue that the new rules will result in highly uneven competition between JRF and non-JRF candidates, defeats the cafeteria system of choosing courses and that the sit-in exam and bell curve grading will affect research-orientation of students.

EFLU issued circular on Wednesday saying that the circular released on Tuesday is being held in abeyance until further orders. However, the Students Union has said that they will continue with their protest until the decisions are completely rolled back.
