The Department of Anthropology, Pondicherry University (PU) in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal and Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata organized a two-day National Seminar on "Tribal Culture in Transition: Issues of Identity, and Sustainability and Development ' from Thursday.

A University release said, Prof Sarit Kumar Choudhury, Director Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya, Bhopal while inaugurating the seminar spoke about the impact of anthropology on our lives and the role that IGRMS plays in extending support to various department of anthropology across the country.

He reiterated the fact that deliberations on issues of tribal cultures in transition are varied and diverse.

Prof Vinaya Kumar Srivastava, Director, Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata delivered the keynote address where he talked about the state of affairs of the departments of anthropology in the country.

He spoke about Levi Strauss' question on the relevance of anthropology, where the Western World is actually looking at anthropology today in order to understand "the others" especially in looking for an alternative system of knowledge.

More than 50 delegates are participating and presenting papers in the seminar.
